Aurora House
Aurora House is a small specialist home specifically designed to support adults with learning disabilities and dementia. The home incorporates dementia-specific design elements and special sensory features . While the home has a real sense of space it also allows for ordinary domestic living as is usual and preferable for those with a learning disability. Some of the service users may have a physical disability or a sensory impairment. The home has been designed to ensure that the staff team are able to assist users of service in achieving their personal goals in an environment that is dementia responsive and also takes into account the learning disability before the onset of dementia. The environment for an individual with dementia can be very daunting and can have a major impact on their well-being. We are very aware of the obstacles those with dementia face on a daily basis. Aurora House provides the facilities to minimise this impact and reassure individuals in a homely environment. The home provides accommodation for seven adults of either sex in large single bedrooms all with en-suite facilities. The three ground floor bedrooms are suitable for wheelchair users and are compliant with all relevant environmental norms. There are no barriers to wheelchair use over the entire ground floor and outside areas. Each bedroom has been individually designed with colour recognition decor. The home has large spacious areas which have been creatively designed with specialist lighting and high quality fixtures and fittings. The home provides a modern and safe lift for travel between the ground and first floor. Aurora House is close to Bedford town centre and provides easy access to mainstream community services, such as shops, leisure facilities and recreational amenities. Bedford is located on a main railway network, with access to London, Kettering, Luton and Wellingborough. As an individualised service, the home promotes the concept of person-centred care, adopting the ethos of freedom and choice. While always seeking to encourage independence the home allows for a home for life for the users of service that require this specialist service.
